Keep the pressure low and the lube for last. That's the short version, and it comes from two kinds of sources: e-bike makers on the water side, and a bike-tool maker on the chain side.
Your own e-bike manual comes first. It may say more than these pages do, and it's the authority for your model.
Water and the electrics
Two e-bike makers say the same thing in different words. One says never to use a power washer on your bike or your e-bike. The high pressure can cause water damage to sensitive electric components, bearings, and lubricated parts.1
Another maker's maintenance page tells owners to avoid high-pressure water jets, with the reason that you don't want to damage electrical components.2
A bike-tool maker's washing guide gives a matching rule for hoses: use only low pressure with a wide spray. It also says not to blast bearings directly with compressed air.3
The e-bike maker's maintenance page also covers the battery. Wipe the battery with a dry cloth to keep connections clean, and make sure it's completely dry before recharging.2
This page doesn't cover removing the battery, or sealing ratings for particular motors. Those details are model-specific, so read your manual.
The chain itself
Chains should be cleaned before they're lubricated. The cardinal rule for long chain life is never to lubricate a dirty chain, as this washes abrasive particles into the rollers.4
The Park Tool guide, written for ordinary bikes, says the key to a clean chain is a degreaser made for bikes. It also says to check the chain for wear first, and to replace a chain that's past its service life rather than clean it.5
Its steps with a chain scrubber, a small box of brushes that clips on the chain, run like this:
- Shift to the smallest cog and front chainring.
- Fill the scrubber with solvent to its fill line.
- Turn the cranks backwards for at least thirty revolutions.
- Pour out the dirty solvent, refill with soapy water and repeat until the chain is thoroughly rinsed.
- Wipe the chain with a clean, dry rag and let it air-dry.
That guide wasn't written for e-bikes. Whether you can turn the cranks backwards, or remove a wheel, depends on your bike. Check the manual before you copy any step.
Used solvent
Always check with local authorities for information on how to dispose of your used solvents.5
Dry, then lube
Once the chain is dry, the guide says to lubricate it, and its heading is blunt: always lubricate the chain after cleaning.5 See chain lube types for what kinds exist.
Questions for your manual or shop
- Does the manual give any water limits for the motor, display and battery?
- Does it say what cleaners are fine to use near the motor?
- Should the battery stay on or come off during cleaning?
- How often does the maker want the chain checked? The measuring page shows how.
